Brassica oleracea var. acephala L. (kale) is widely grown in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. Kale growing has not been common in the other regions of Turkey. A number of diseases can seriously afect Brassica crop production. Field surveys were done to determine the occurrence of viruses in kale-growing areas in Ordu in 2013-2014. Leaf samples were collected from kale plants and tested for the presence of Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV), Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV), Turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV), and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) by DAS-ELISA and bioassays. Result of serological and biological tests showed that 7.7% of these samples were infected with TuMV. However, CaMV, CMV, and TYMV were not detected in any of the tested kale plants. The occurrence of... |

Polyphasic analysis of four new Vibrio isolates originating from the haemolymph of diseased cultured oysters is described. The new isolates were closely related to Vibrio splendidus, having 98 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Phylogenetic analysis based on DNA gyrase subunit B (gyrB), RNA polymerase Quo factor (rpoD), replication origin-binding protein (rctB) and transmembrane regulatory protein (toxR) genes, fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism and DNA-DNA hybridization experiments clearly showed that the new isolates form a tight genomic group that is different from the currently known Vibrio species. It is proposed that these new isolates should be accommodated in a novel species, Vibrio gigantis sp. nov. Phenotypic features that... |

The occurrence of diseases and its influence on strawberry yield in a greenhouse as well as its association with water management are still not well known. So, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different water levels and soil mulches on strawberry plant health and yield in a greenhouse. The experiment was carried out at Atibaia, State of São Paulo, Brazil, from April to December 1995. The experimental design was a 2 × 3 factorial, in randomized blocks, with five replications, and consisted of two soil mulches and three water levels. The soil mulches consisted of clear or black plastic. Trickle irrigation was applied whenever the soil water potential reached -10, -35 and -70 kPa at a depth of ten centimeters. Cultivar Campinas IAC 2712 was... |
